Jennifer and I ate here on our honeymoon in Charleston, SC back in August. (I recommend fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits!) I had been here a few years before with my family and snapped a photo of the front porch. Our trip inspired me to paint this scene.

This is my first attempt at the Different Strokes challenge. Every two weeks Karin Jurick (she hosts the blog) posts a photo for everyone to paint. All the completed paintings are then posted for everyone to see and compare their work. It's a great idea, especially if you want be motivated. There are so many great artists who participate.

This week she posted a black and white farm scene. We had to determine the color based on the values in the photograph.

Final painting for class

We had two painting classes left and I hadn't started my final painting. I had forgotten the visuals material I wanted to use at home, so I had to look through magazines in class for my 4th painting. I found a photo of a golf course and this is what I came up with. I didnt have time to worry about details, only values and quick brush strokes. This might be my favorite painting from that class.

Grand Teton National Park

When I got home from class today, I started this little 6x12 painting. I had bought this canvas board a long time ago and thought it would make for a perfect beach scene since it was so elongated. The cold weather and snow flurries we are having sure does make me want to find a spot like this soon!

My Neice and Nephew

I finished this drawing about a month ago of Mackenzie and Madden:) They are the coolest kids! I gave it to my brother and sister-in-law as a surprise. It's about 8 1/2 x 11

Design Class: The Minotaur

We had to choose a mythological creature and come up with our own design by combining visual materials and written documention of what features the creature exhibits. I have the basic line drawing complete and now I have to add the detail.

Yellowstone 2007: Black and White

When I found out that our first painting for Painting I was to be in black and white, I immediately knew that I wanted to paint a scene from my trip to Yellowstone National Park. There were so many reference photos to go through. I eventually decided on this one of a lone bison grazing in front of Old Faithful. He must have grown accustomed to the large crowds, because he never really cared that we were there. Overall, I am very pleased with this painting.

Elkmont Bridge Painting

I started my third painting for class on Wednesday and this is how far I have gotten. I have laid most of the colors in and got the arches fairly accurate:) This bridge is located in the Great Smoky Mountains NP in an old logging and resort community called Elkmont. My grandmother was born very close to this area around the time the park was being formed. We actually have a family cemetery up the road between the abandoned houses where descendants of the Trentham family can still be buried. I have uncles, aunts, and grandparents laid to rest there. It is so peaceful.

High School Art

These two paintings were assigned in art class back in high school. We had to recreate two originals. The first one is widely recognized as Van Gogh's Cafe Terrace at Night. The second painting is The Garden by American artist Melborne Hardwick. I completed these sometime in 2002.
